Art imitating life and life imitating art. I struggled with today's post because in my eye, the naked form is exquisite. I am a lover of art and yes, I am a card carrying member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. However, what I see and believe to be beautiful, others may not. So I ask, if you are offended then please do not proceeded further.

When I first saw this piece, I immediately knew this was Michelangelo's, Statue of David. How apropos. A muse, a model of great status and stature imitating the art of one of the greatest creations. While Gandy's pose is not politically related as the original muse, his impact on exposing himself inside and out is just as dynamic.

The deep similarities to the body length, structure and shape almost feels as if Michelangelo sped through time, found pictures of Vivanco's photos of Gandy, sketched them and returned to his own time to hone this creature of power and beauty.

Similarly, Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker' takes on fresh life with Gandy posed in the same position. A living sculpture in which the artist intention is to show the beauty of form and movement within the stillness.

I confess. I love David's body. It is imperfectly perfect. His lats and deltoids are flawless even if his posture is not. Of course this picture is not a fair assessment of his posture. I have seen his walk on the runway and he pitches slightly forward in his walk giving an appearance of a slight slouch. Yet, his walk is what we writers call, predatory. A sleek beast on the prowl much like a jaguar.

I love the way Richardson dirtied up Gandy in this photo shoot. His hair 'fried, died and slicked to the side' with pomade gives David a clean look but the grittiness of the surroundings and pared down stylish clothing pushes the hard core edge. In the Mike J. Penn photo shoot, we see yet another side of Gandy.

The casual styling of an everyday bloke relaxing is only proof of David's chameleon like qualities. There is an intense energy behind these pictures. Look at that smile! I don't see it nearly enough.

Bond. James Bond. The name is as iconic as the one man who is most famous for that role. If I were to cast David Gandy in a part, James Bond would be my first choice (Sorry Daniel Craig).

Seriously...look at THIS car! I know what you are thinking. How can you look at the car when David is in it? I can because the car is as heavenly as 'Himself' and I think if I were there, I would have pushed Mr. Gandy out of the driver seat and rode off. They do make an automatic in those cars right? Besides being cast in the Bond role, many fans have suggested that when Karen Marie Moning's Fever series comes to film, Gandy should be first choice as Jericho Barrons. Other choices would be Vishous in Lover Unbound from J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series and my personal favorite, Larissa Ione's - Ares in Eternal Rider in the Lords of Deliverance series.

Rebel WITH a cause. I don't know if I would necessarily call David a rebel. He's certainly fashion forward in his personal taste in clothing. But today, I am here to talk about some of the causes that David has taken a personal interest in and how you can too.

James Dean's enigmatic smile and devil may care persona was larger than life. He was charismatic in an understated way and yet he had the ability to mold himself to any character. In his short life, he left an indelible mark on the world of film.

David is certainly making his mark on the world. First up, the London Marathon! Yes, folks, that's 26.2 miles of asphalt pounding against your bones. At one point I remember reading that David had issues with his knee and he was struggling to train. Marathons beat your body while lifting your spirits. I know this first hand from running half marathons, 10 and 5 k races.

Last year, David also became the face of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. If I didn't already have a major crush on Mr. Gandy, I definitely would after this! And if you are paying attention to the links on my post you will see why a charity like Battersea is close to his heart.

As Christmas approaches, I think of the days when I was little and my sister and I played with our Barbie dolls endlessly, day and night. We'd make up stories and give each doll a name and occupation.

Somehow, model was never one of the jobs my male dolls had but that's because the position has been filled by the real life Ken. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present, Leif Stacey.

The Alaskan native admits that growing up he played with G.I. Joe action figures or sticks and rocks.

Barbie came as a curiosity for Stacey who grew up in the wilds of Alaska with his older brother Thor.

Of course the other gorgeous blond who is not shy about showing off her ta-tas is none other than Heidi Klum. Leif admits that due to the extreme professionalism of both Bruce Weber and Heidi Klum he was able to get through the shoot.

One thing I can say for Stacey is that even though he doesn't come off as shy in his pictures - because he remains so, even with approaching women and asking them out, his photos all come off as very genuine.

In our house there used to be a plaque that greeted you as you sat down to the dinner table.

It read:
TACT - The ability to tell someone to go the hell and make him feel happy to be on his way.

As writers, we enjoy the freedom to flex our creativity whenever we want. However, we must also remember that writing is a business like any profession.

This means editing yourself in public as well as in private. It's never a good idea to say whatever pops into your head because there are repercussions for taking such actions.

I've been working in a business environment since the age of 16, most of that time spent in career placement and the business rule of thumb has not changed in the twenty plus years since I typed my first professional letter.

If you have to ask the question, "Does this sound professional?", then it usually isn't.

When contacting a prospective agent or publishing house, your communication should be concise, well written and checked repeatedly for grammatical and spelling errors. After all, this is the first impression of who you are as a writer.

Addressing the potential employers in a fashion of "Yo'", "Hi" or "I don't know if you remember me" will guarantee your letter immediate seclusion to the circular file - that's the trash can if you haven't guessed.

If you are uncertain of how to write a professional business letter, you can find an excellent examples here.

Similarly, when speaking to a professional in the industry, always be mindful that this person could be your future employer.

Maintain a clean and neat appearance (my mother was extremely strict regarding this practice, looking like a bum was not optional), greet them with a smile, it helps to present an open manner.

Lastly, but certainly not least, address the person by their formal name.

Gearing up for the New Jersey RWA, Put Your Heart in a Book conference, all of these things will be ever present in the back of my mind. As this is my first conference, I will be mindful that this is the beginning of my journey in the field of writing in terms of networking.

Put my best foot forward is crucial. I hope to see you all there!

I'm a finalist?....ME?

Last month, I was heavily promoting my chapter's latest contest - Celtic Hearts - Novellas Need Love, Too! I knew the contest would be coming up and I struggled with the decision to enter or not to enter. I had written four novellas, none of them complete all them very different from each other.

In addition to promoting, I was asked to be a coordinator of one of the categories (Historical).
I wanted to do my best to coordinate as it was my first time.

I made a bunch of excuses and decided that I could not enter the contest.

I couldn't coordinate the contest, work a full time job and get my submission and synopsis ready for the contest.

BUT, that was the 'self-doubter' in me, whispering in my ear, playing on my fears. What was really going on, is that I had talked myself out of a wonderful opportunity for my peers to see my work.

SO, kicking ~~self doubt~~ myself in the ass, I took the plunge and entered two stories. I dreaded hitting the send button. Not because I didn't think my stories weren't good. I love them! I certainly do or I would not have written them.

It's amazing how much hair, nails and quite possibly a tooth or two that you can lose in 30 days.

I could blame the growth spurt of grey hair on my head to entering the contest but that wouldn't be fair...perhaps my rapid weight gain would finally have an explanation? No?

I certainly confess that I did everything in my power to forget about the contest. Hard to do when you are coordinating said contest.

My solution? To judge another contest. I admit that 'sadist/masochist' is my middle name when it comes to reading just how good other writers in my genre happen to be.

Still, I never expected the wonderful news I received Wednesday. Shocked beyond belief would be underwhelming to describe how I felt. My hands were shaking when the Paranormal Coordinator, Janet Flowers contacted me.

I heard only five words, "Congratulations, you are a finalist." and then I completely blacked out. It seems hyperventilating can have a strange affect on the body. I didn't really black out but I think I did see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And yes, I did jump for joy. Not as graceful as this lovely lass. After all, I'm old and probably would have broken a hip in the process but jump I did!

My co-workers were not impressed. Of course I have a tendency to do crazy things so I guess this outburst was considered normal for me.

After I made a kabillion calls, mostly to friends and family, and maybe a random crank call or two, I realized that a quote that author, Hannah Howell posted on her wall a few weeks ago really hit home.

The quote was from the prolifically gifted author, Nora Roberts. I think you will agree, this quote is fitting.

"If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...

Needless to say, I have been on cloud 9 and my family, friends but especially DH have been so supportive through my manic ups and downs this year.

In fact, DH gave me a Congratulatory card last night. And in it he said, "It's not the size of the step, It's not always the direction of the step, not even the quantity of the steps. It's the courage of taking that step!" He brought me to tears, what a man!

Derek's Corner: Real Men Writing Romance - Character Development: The Five Stages of Grief

As writers, we know how important it is to have flawed characters. These poor creations we love to twist and torture in unique ways, as they stumble toward their HEA. Virtually every romance I pick up, one of the main characters has experienced significant loss. Whether the loss of a family member, spouse, friend, or something more material like a job, status, or a fortune. Sometimes the loss is remote, other times more recent.

Whether writing a historical or something more contemporary, I believe we could all benefit from familiarizing ourselves with the 5 Stages of Grief, as described by Elisabeth Kulber-Ross.

Originally published in 1969, her work is based on research of over 500 dying patients. She found that all experienced the same stages, though in no particular order when faced with grief and tragedy.

Denial - The refusal to face the facts of loss. When asked, the typical response is "I'm fine." Typically, this keeps the person frozen, unable to move forward.

Anger - Raging at the universe, the divine, a person or groups of persons, this is a stage that provides energy, but often can be self destructive.

Bargaining - Attempting to rescue a lost cause, trying to negotiate with a higher power for more time with a loved one, or promising to turn over a new leaf if things can go back to where they were before. This stage does not accept the facts, and is looking for a loophole.

Depression - Depression looks different in everyone to a degree. Some become isolated, withdrawn, refusing to see anyone, spending time crying, and ceasing normal activities. Others have a more agitated depression which can be expressed in self destructive behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, risk taking, pursuit of violence.

Acceptance - The person finds a place of balance. While still bearing the pain of loss, they are able to focus on what can be done to move forward.

Grieving Angel, William W. Story

By the time most of us hit our 40's, we have experienced significant loss of some sort. Being able to put ourselves in that place again emotionally may be too painful, though it can be a powerful way to help write about loss in a character's life. If too raw, we need only look around to those in our sphere and find all sorts of loss to draw from.

As observers of human behavior, writers have an unwritten obligation to reflect the human condition in our characters. I often read one of these stages in a character who has experienced significant loss, but cannot recall reading all 5 stages. These stages provide an automatic structure for a grieving character.

The next time you find yourself writing a H/H with profound loss issues, consider using the above stages to create your character arc. In what ways have you drawn upon your own experiences of loss, or others close to you in your writing?
